What Do Laser Treatments Feel Like?

In one pulse, the laser removes all the hair on a patch of skin the size of a nickel. Generally, laser hair removal is not much more painful than waxing, though the sensation is different. With each pulse, the feeling resembles a rubber band snapping against the skin for a quick second. Discomfort is only felt while the laser is hitting the skin and doesn’t last. Most people do not require an anesthetic cream but it can be used upon request.

What should I do before my treatment?

4 weeks prior to your first session and throughout the course of your treatment you should not wax, tweeze, thread or remove hair from the root using any other hair removal method. The area that will be treated should be shaved 1-2 days prior to treatment so that the energy is targeted towards the hair follicle and not on the hair above the skin’s surface.

How many treatments will I need?

Most areas require 5 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks for the face and 8 to 10 weeks for the body, but the number of laser hair removal treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on various factors such as your hair's thickness, the area treated, and your hair's growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but actually go through three distinct phases: Anagen (growth), Catagen (regression), and Telogen (resting). Laser hair removal works by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase which is 20-30% at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

What happens after the treatment?

Immediately following your laser hair removal treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Which is absolutely normal. Post treatment, we recommend protecting the area from the sun, any additional heat to the area, avoiding exercise, saunas and other activities which may irritate the area or induce heat for 24-48 hours immediately after treatment. The area should be moisturized with a soothing cream such as aloe vera cream.

What should I do to manage the hair between treatments?

You should not have much hair to manage in between treatments. If you need to, shaving or trimming is the only way to manage hair growth between treatments.

What are the possible side effects?

Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening, itching and swelling around the hair follicle, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less.
